How Many Persons in the Spa?
Rub a dub dub, 3 hot tubbers in the tub, what size hot tub do we need?
On first blink, it may seem like the size of hot tub is related to the number of people that will be using it, but this merits further consideration.
2 Person Hot Tubs
A 2-person spa is the smallest portable hot tub made out of acrylic. There are other inflatable so called hot tubs as well, but they are more like vinyl rafts where you sit on the floor and a bubbling device creates small bubbles. This may be fine for a cottage, but a more robust portable hot tub is made out of higher quality materials like acrylic.
The 2-person hot tub is for one or two people and good ones allow for the complete submersion of shoulders under water. Shallow models where shoulders are not submersed in the warm water can quickly become uncomfortable, especially outdoors.
The 2 person hot tubs fit in many places that larger hot tubs may not fit. They can pass through doorways or gates easier and can be placed on some decks that will support the weight of the spa, water and 2 people. They also require less electricity to heat since the water volume that is being heated is typically less than 4,5 or 6 person spas.
3 Person Hot Tubs
The next largest hot tub is the 3-person spa. This unit is also referred to as a corner spa or triangular hot tub.
Fitting 3 people in one of these is a bit of a stretch, but they still have more room than the 2 person spa, and if company is over, then up to 3 can be accommodated.
This type of spa is easy to operate because it is 120 volt plug and play and comes with a GFCI protected power cord, so you just fill with water and plug into a power outlet.
The tradeoff is slower heating in the winter because it only can do 1kw of heating vs. 4kw if it were wired as 230 volt, but that requires an electrician to setup the 230 volt wiring and external GFCI for you.
4 Person Hot Tubs
A 4-person hot tub already has more elbow room as they are wider than the 2-person spas and even though they are usually not used for 4 people, they can accommodate friends and family as needed.
5-6 Person Hot Tubs
For a bigger party spa, a 5 or 6 person spa may be in order. These spas can hold more water, some up to 2000 litres.
This also means there is more space to move around, so even if one person or two people are using the spa, having more space means being able to try different seats and also be able to move around more, actually doing a little water exercise if desired.
Rubber duckies are a staple in any size hot tub.
A five star hot tub is one in which you spend time and enjoy your massage, down time and muscle relaxation.
- It is really hard to believe many ratings online. They are made by the companies that produce the spas in addition to competitors or misinformed individuals. There are also some real reviews online, so they should be viewed in sum and partials of truths may be extracted from the copy.
- If a company has been in business for over 20 years, there is a good chance they are doing something right, so dealing with manufacturers and distributors that have stood the test of time rather than those that surface, operate for a few years, then shut down, reorganize and then open up in a different name.
- This applies to doing business with anyone and the test of time is where I give someone 5 stars. A manufacturer in North America that has weathered recent economic hardship gets 5 stars for surviving and thriving in this environment.
- 2,3,4,5,6 or 7 Person Hot Tub
- The choice of what sized hot tub to get is not just about how many people fit in the spa, but how much room is desired (and available) for having a wider range of motion in the spa.
- If occaisional visitors will want to socialize in the spa also means planning on a larger spa. The most popular spa sizes are either the 2 or 3 person models, a medium sized 4 or 5 person spa, or a large 6-8 person spa.
- The larger the spa, the more water to heat, but you need to be comfortable in the spa and have enough room to relax.
