Typical Spa Size
For simplicity, hot tubs are often sized based on the number of persons it could accommodate.
A 5 person spa would have room for 5 people to use the spa at the same time.
This should be thought of as maximum capacity rather than everyday use. Many so called "8 person spas" that, at first blush, have 8 seats, would only accommodate 8 very small people, and that very cozily.
The seating capacity is more of a guide as to how many different seats there are for less people to enjoy.
In a party pinch, all 8 can squeeze in, but the water will most likely overflow at that point unless there are enough gallons in the spa to hold water and people.
So this brings us to another way to compare spa sizes and that is by how much water it can hold.
Many times a spa will accommodate the same amount of people or have the same exterior dimensions, and yet the amount of water in gallons (or litres) may vary dramatically. Why is this? Because some spas have less barriers than others with more open seating.
Some spa manufacturers need to make their spa lips around the edges very thick due to limitations in their particular manufacturing process, so that also can take up valuable seating space. So compare water volumes for relative roominess.
The false bottom or pedestal bottom may create the illusion of depth on paper, and even in the showroom. Althought the outside of the spa may indeed by 40 inches deep, the actual footwell may only be 32 inches deep if a high pedestal floor is used on the spa.
This also cuts into the available legroom and overall gallons, so comparing spa size based on how much water it can hold is also a good way to tell how much room there actually is in the spa.
Finally, the actual dimensions of the spa are an indicator as to what size the spa is. Popular sizes are 82x82 inches and 92x92 inches, but there are several smaller and larger sizes available.
Another obstruction inside the spa that takes up valuable room is the sideways filter, or the needlessly oversized, triple filter contraption that takes up much of the spa's space (and forces you to buy 3 replacement filter cartridges instead of 1). Look for spas that have designed their filter system to be non-obtrusive, and preferrably top-loaded, so you don't need to drag the dirty filter cartridge through the inside of the spa as you go to pull it out.
Hot tub dimensions are given in length x width x height.
Note that sometimes the shipped hot tub may give the dimensions differently for shipping purposes if the spa is shipped standing tall on a pallet.
For shipping dimensions of a spa, the packaging thickness is added as well as the height of a shipping pallet. Many spas that are shipped overseas by LTL container shipment are also placed inside their own plywood boxes which can add to the dimensions and weight of the shipped spa.
