Hot Tubs Canada FAQ
Frequently Asked Hot Tub Questions
- What are some of the most commonly asked hot tub questions?
- Although much hot tub information is available from local hot tub dealers, we can't get the full story because each dealer is trying to position their brand as the world's best in a highly competitive field.
- Spa Owner Questions
- How does a spa work?
Basically, a spa is an acrylic shell made from a sheet of acrylic that has jets powered by pumps through a plumbing system. The heater controlled by the spa electronics, keeps the water at the proper temperature. - Proper workmanship guarantees that the individual components selected to make up the spa are assembled correctly. Attention is given to the workmanship in putting it all together as well as the hot tub's unique design and features.
Variations on this include spas that have just one or two jet pumps, many or few jets and an air blower or just water pump(s). A spa ozonator in conjunction with added bromine or chlorine helps keep the water sanitary.
What size hot tub is right?- The number of people using the spa is not the only consideration when selecting size. Having a bigger tub makes even solo hot-tubbing more enjoyable as there is variety in the different jet configurations of each seat.
- Having a lounger in the spa is great for some, but the lounger takes up the room of 2-3 seats. Having a deeper footwell is great for having a place to put feet, especially when there are more people in the spa.
- A larger spa is roomier for aqua exercise and moving around at the expense of having to heat a larger volume of water.
Hot Tub Hydrotherapy
One of the reasons people buy hot tubs is for their hydrotherapy benefits. Hot water stimulates blood flow and oxygen to the brain.
Hot water hydrotherapy can massage tight muscles and aid in relaxation. Hydrotherapy is even proported to heal different types of diseases mainly due to being immersed in warm water.
Certainly, aches and pains are allieviated plus a hot tub is a great place to unwind and relieve daily stress.

Step into luxury by adding a spa step to your hot tub.
Beware of self-proclaimed internet sites that rate the various brands of hot tubs. In many cases, the hot tub manufacturer has to pay for these high ratings.
In no way do they actually reflect the quality of the current model spa. If you think about it, it would be next to impossible or extremely costly for any one agency to test several hundred current model year spas, so take these ratings with a grain of salt. This is hardly an objective way of presenting an opinion about a product.
- Here on Buy Spa Canada, we seek out the best deals on the internet and present them to Canadians. It makes no sense to overpay for a big ticket item such as a spa with the invention of the internet and direct access to factory distribution. Discount hot tubs can be found online as many spa manufacturers are feeling the effects of a slowing global economy.
Another FAQ relates to Horsepower. How much horsepower do I need?
Horsepower ratings of spa pumps are also something to be taken with a grain of salt. The actual HP is slightly irrelevant, but GPM or gallons per minute is the way you measure the power and strength of the potential massage.
Most pumps are not rated this way, but a knowledgeable spa specialist should be able to compare GPM rates of different spas. This information is also not that critical as long as the plumbing design and pump is powerful enough to run the amount of jets plumbed on that line.
Using a manifold distribution, most spa companies now plumb jets to receive water from a distribution manifold instead of the old style of plumbing where water flowed in a single line from one jet to the next where the last jet in the line would have the least pressure. Now jets and diverter valves help to control the actual strength of a massage more than just having an on or off massage.
- Check the spa pressure with your hand when looking at spas to actually feel the massage.
See what options the spa gives you to control the actual pressure coming out of the jets. This can range from diverter knobs or even rings around the jets where you can adjust each individual jet.
The truth is, that you can actually have too much horsepower, after a few minutes it can be painful to sit in front of fully blasting jets, but most spas allow you to dial down the pressure. However, a 7HP pump may be considered mainly "marketing" with little benefit to the user over a 4HP or 5HP spa pump.
